Proactive solutions to ensure the reliability, performance and quality of real-time IP communications

For many enterprises deploying IP telephony, IP voice quality issues are commonplace. Both users and administrators complain when words seem to disappear during choppy calls, when parties talk over one another, and when calls get unexpectedly cut off.

Furthermore, it is far more complex to converge an IP telephony system on an existing data network than it is to deploy a traditional circuit-switched system. A major factor in the complexity is the deployment and management of a coherent and consistent enterprise Quality of Service (QoS) policy that prioritizes time-sensitive voice traffic.

Creating a QoS policy for a converged network is a tedious, time-consuming task that many enterprises simply ignore, or even worse, set and forget. Typically, with set-and-forget methodologies, a converged network is unable to adapt the QoS policy proactively as the network changes, as traffic changes and as needs of the enterprise change.

Given the dynamic nature of the network infrastructure and the traffic it supports, shouldn’t service quality management (SQM) be dynamic too?

Introducing Xelor Software

Xelor Software provides the first proactive solution to address the three major challenges facing enterprises with IP telephony: the reliability of phone service, the performance of the converged network, and the quality of each call.

The company’s software has been in development for more than three years. The core research and development was undertaken at the Australian Telecommunications Cooperative Research Centre (ATcrc) in Perth, Western Australia. Leveraging years of experience focusing on QoS issues for ATM networks, the initial engineering team applied the maturing standards for Class of Service for Layer 2 networks and Differentiated Service for Layer 3 networks to the fast-growing convergence of voice and data on a single network.

In September 2002, the original team founded Cortec Systems Pty Ltd in Perth. Working with the support of the Western Australian Telecommunication Research Institute (WATRI), they developed a prototype network and product that proved their theory: voice and data don’t play well together on a converged network without effective QoS supervision. They also showed that existing techniques were costly and complex.

By the fall of 2003, Cortec Systems attracted a team of Australian venture capitalists to fund further development of the solution. Within a year, Cortec Systems was ready for the world’s largest market – the United States.

To enter the U.S. and other world markets, Cortec recruited Rob Scott, a well-known industry executive with proven success in taking voice and data networking start-up companies from their infancy to commercial success.

With Rob Scott as the company’s first president and chief executive officer, Cortec Systems started operations in the U.S. Scott in turn recruited an executive team to lead the company’s go-to-market strategy. One of his team’s first moves, after discovering that Cortec was a common corporate name in the U.S., was to rename the company Xelor Software and create a product family under the umbrella XelorRate.

The new executive team then established the company’s Mission Statement:

Xelor Software provides proactive solutions for service quality management to ensure reliability, performance and quality of time-sensitive, realtime IP communications.

To ensure reliability

XelorRate software must have knowledge of the network topology - including network elements, links, bandwidth and endpoints - and the ability to automate the deployment of CoS and DiffServ classifications according to the network equipment provider’s reference manual for QoS and industry best practices

To ensure performance

XelorRate software must give real-time traffic strict prioritization on a call-by-call basis and isolate a deterministic volume of voice calls to maintain a consistent and predictable delay constancy over the local and wide area network

To ensure quality

XelorRate software must perform a real-time Service Admission Control calculation and control the usage of bandwidth and network queues to avoid overloading the network with real-time traffic and causing all calls to suffer equally
